ASHISH showcased their new collection yesterday at LFW, it's one of the stand out collections for us so far. 'New Age, Rainbow colours, tie dye and Goa were the inspirations' for A/W 12.

As you can imagine MUD are obviously digging the tie dye element! As well as the interesting layering, casual denim jackets, GOLD and SEQUINS - what more could we ask for? There seems to be an Indian influence playing a part in the collection, with use of eccentric facial jewellery, head scarves and bold pattern. Toaism and Krishanism inspire the print and we also see some bold psychedelic paisley going on! Ashish maintains its trademark playfulness - this time injected through the use of slogans, smiley faces, ying yangs and Buddha’s. Slogans including 'HEAVEN 7' 'CLOUD 9' 'DON'T GO' 'RELAX' and 'BE HAPPY' It's like native India meeting a 90's acid trip - a take on the modern hippy!

Ashish will be launching another collection for Topshop later this year, so all of us will get the chance to have a little bit of Ashish in our lives (if this collection is out of your budget!) We can't wait!!

STUDIO 89 - DUFF DISCO

The last Studio 89 brought us house and disco vibes of the highest order.
It was a special night down in the basement with beats from Zoo Look , Charlie Tarr and residents Slow Dance and Self Natured music.

We had the best night on Saturday dancing alongside the best crowd of people in the small intimate basement and under the dim red lights of Studio 89.

Keeping the music strictly Deep House and Disco and bringing the slow and sexy vibes were the incredible, Medlar [Wolf Music] b2b Jenson Mutton, Slow Dance, Self Natured and The King Regards.

We couldn't have asked for a better line up or better crowd of people to kick off the launch of the new venue - cheers to the guys at Studio and everyone who helped make it happen, and to those who kept the party going through into Sunday!

MUD meet M A N I K - NYC.

MUD were lucky enough to catch up with M A N I K in London at the latest Krankrother party.

It's been a busy year for the 24 year old wonder, he is running the game being one of the few producers in the scene to have come out of New York City. He boasts an impressive discography - with recent releases on some of the most recognised labels such as Ovum, Culprit LA, Poker Flat and Hot Creations. He's all about Funk, Deep House, Acid, Disco? you decide!

Hey Manik thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions for MUD. We loved your set at the latest Krankbrother party, it was great to meet you!

How did you find the Krankbrother party and London itself? - This was my 4th time playing London this year and each time it is amazing. I love coming to play in this city as the crowd is always up for it. I thought this Krankbrother party was top notch and one of the best of my fall tour.

We know you’re from the big NYC, we love New York! Where is your favourite place in the city? - Any favourite clubs?Yes, NYC in the building! Well I love hanging out in my neighborhood of Astoria in Queens. I also like to go to Williamsburg and hit up the restaurants- many good ones there. As far as venues, NYC doesn't really have true club nights anymore. Most of the top class parties or events are happening at Hotels, Rooftops, Private things, or 'indie music' venues. With that said, I like Le Bain at The Standard Hotel, Cameo Gallery in Willy B, and also dig some of the events held at Hudson.

What inspires you? What are your musical influences? - I am influenced by everything- mostly how I grew up. I like a lot of music and always have. On a regular basis I will listen to bands like Little Dragon, Holy Ghost!, Toro Y Moi, and The Rapture, and even some stuff from Kanye West or the legendary DJ Premiere. Good music is good music so I am all about that really. If its hot it's hot.

How did you first get into DJing and producing? - I have always produced music. I remember making hip hop in my bedroom as a 13 year old on a crappy PC. I also recall playing Trumpet in J.H.S, and keyboards in College too. With DJing it was different. I got into it as a hobby because I thought it was fun. Then it just grew into what it is today as a result of my music being in demand. I love both but I will always be a Music Producer/Composer first and foremost.

What producers and DJ’s do you rate/admire the most? - In our scene I would say I really admire Matthew Dear, Jamie Jones, Tensnake, Josh Wink and many others. Matt in particular is a great musician and also a humble individual. I really admire how much he has achieved and also his open musical mind. I mean Asa Breed is one of my fav albums of the last few years. Also, I look up to the way he is able to juggle his solo productions, DJing, touring, all at the same time as being the lead member of his band and touring with them too- making real indie music. It is something I am starting now too. A side project that is a true band. I have wanted to do it for a while, and have begun it so can't wait to launch! Look out for that in 2012.

What tracks are you loving at the moment? - Shout out to Cera Alba and his 'Missing You' which is a crowd killer. I really dig everything Ultrasone has been doing lately too. Watch out for their Supplement Facts release. My favorite remix of the summer was Tensnake for Runaway's Chapter IV. Lots of good music now for sure. I also love the new Little Dragon album. Probably the best of 2011- with mine a close second ;)

What is your most memorable/favourite gig you’ve ever played? - Tough choice. I will say there a few. I really enjoyed playing at Black Box in Ferrara Italy the other week. Absolutely amazing vibe in there. I also loved the gig I played at XOYO in August and this last Krankbrother London gig was super too. Arma 17 upstairs a few weeks ago was great as well...but many good ones this year.

What can we expect from M A N I K in the coming months? - A lot of my new original singles are finally being released in the next 6 - 8 weeks, so I am very happy about that. I have my last full original EP of 2011 coming out on Culprit in November. It's called "She Watches Me EP" and also has a remix from The Revenge. Then my anticipated Hot Creations release of "Body High" is out really soon as well. That will be out on the Hot Creations post summer sampler 12''. I also got a track coming in a few weeks on the next Hot Waves compilation too. That's called 'House Of Flies' which has been a staple in my sets since April. My Remix for Get Physical and DJ T will be out soon as well. Plus check out my free edit I did of 'All Alone' by Toro Y Moi which XLR8R was all about. So big up to them.

As you must have already noticed MUD are appreciative of all things house and underground, we crave a party with a good vibe! We got extremely excited to find out about a London KRANKBROTHER all day party that was going on the same week we were set to be in the city for London Fashion Week. With a dreamy line up of both Nick Curly and MANIK making an appearance all the way from NYC and also having heard a lot of cool things about Krankbrother and their rooftop extravaganzas with the likes of Lee Foss, Lee Curtis and such we thought it made perfect sense to go along and see what it was all about – And my god we were not disappointed!! WOW - what a crazy party, we will sure be back for more!!

So who are Krankbrother? Basically they are the coolest of brothers who go by the names of Kieran and Danny Clancy. Not only do they know how to keep us ladies dancing with their sexed up sound, they are responsible for throwing some of the most cutting edge underground parties in London and they also act as a DJ booking agency representing hot emerging talent around the world! They currently support new kid on the block Alexis Raphael and names such as Wildkats and Nick Lawson. Krankbrother are best known for bringing the hottest names to the most unique venues, making use of unused spaces such as derelict pubs, old railway arches, rooftops and warehouses all over London! Their parties pride themselves on bringing in the most sexy crowds and best vibes, the brothers work to make each party special and unique, no two parties will be the same – And that’s what makes these parties unmissable! J

What inspired you to start KB? How did you first get into it?Basically we were fed up with all the shit clubs in London - We were also DJing everyday anyway so we made a use of that and decided we wanted to create our own parties. Parties in decent venues with a good crowd of people, you know - good looking crowds who are there because we love the same music!

Farewell to Backroom @ The Vaults

It's been a sad weekend for us and more so for the Cardiff music scene - the end of an era for Backroom, as The Vaults (Backroom's home for the past 2 years) close its doors. So, let us paint the picture of this unique venue and a hidden gem which provided a night like no other in the UK! The old Natwest Bank in the heart of Cardiff bay closed down in 2002, it now stands as disused grade 2 listed building situated on Bute Street and somewhere deep in its basements you have the bank vaults - home of the party!

And this party we talk of, it's quite literally something else!!
You would firstly enter this Victorian building to be greeted by a huge hall which was previously the main room of the Natwest Bank, there's an oddness in the fact you find furniture and fixtures still intact - Somewhere beyond you in this great hall, you could here the faint pounding of the music. As you draw closer, passing through narrow hallways and walking down metal stair cases the excitement builds and it all hits you! When you find the main room it's hot its intimate and quite frankly freakin' amazing. The vibe is electric, the crowd unpretentious, friendly and there for a party - damn straight! Oh how we will miss those moments when the white light kicks up for those few seconds and we'd see smiles and our best friends stomping to techno beats! And we will miss our favourite Claire James dropping 'The Red Room' each time. Many have often drawn similarities to Berlin's famous Berghain - claiming the vaults as Cardiff's very own Panorama Bar, how lucky we were!

Backroom have brought the party to Cardiff with resident DJ's Dave Little and Claire James consistently delivering us the goods! Gracing the decks have been some of the biggest and most influential techno and underground house DJ's out there. Derrick Carter, Cassy, Giles Smith & James Priestly (secretsundaze) ,Oliver Deutschmann

Ed Davenport, Anja Schneider, Levon Vincent, Sebo K, Nick Höppner, Melon, Jens Bond, Futureboogie, Prosumer to name just a few.

Us girls here definitely shed a tear at the final party with Andre Galluzzi (Cocoon) , what an amazing night to finish off indeed! Backroom @ The Vaults, you will be sorely missed and we hope your doors are not closed for too long! :(

Mark Tauriello - Young Fashion Designer

"WORKS FIT FOR AN AVANT-GARDE SPACE AGE MASSACRE"

MUD met Mark Tauriello outside a show at New York fashion week earlier this year. We started chatting and found out that he was a fashion designer from New Jersey and was in New York covering a couple of shows for the online publication the New York Cool. We loved his lego brick sunglasses (below) and we later discovered they were from his upcoming collection, Winter2084. His collection is very avant garde and is full of geometric shapes which we love ;).

Interview with MUD

Where are you based?
I am based out of Irvington, New Jersey. I create my designs at home in a limited but colorful space. My town has some hood cred.

How did you get into fashion design?
It was really a life long process and hard to pin point because I consider my self as a self taught "designer". Growing up I wanted to direct horror and science fiction films, but then I learned that horror/sci-fi films were more of a design/conceptual inspiration for me. In high school I was very much into the punk scene, so often I would re-design my clothes by adding zippers, patches, rips, the typical bad ass stuff. As time progressed I started to realize fashion to me was more of an art form than just clothing. When I attended Drew University I studied fine art where I was able to fuse all of these elements together that make up what I do today.

Tell us about your Winter2084 collection?
The Winter 2084 collection is a really loaded collection with multiple sources of overlapping inspiration. It's my very first fashion collection, and it will continue to grow until the year 2084 (assuming I am still alive), so technically it's my first and last collection (but not my only collection). The pieces are hand assembled from recycled materials, making it truly one of a kind. The clothing is meant for the post apocalyptic world, where it's kill or be killed. The idea was to create hand sewn geometric armor with a raw aesthetic. When I started the collection it was shortly after a bad break up. My life fell apart and I had to piece my life back together out of all of this emotional wreckage, and Winter 2084 is just that. Piecing life, clothing, back together to move forward in a new and uncertain world.
I picked the year 2084 simply as a reference to the Orwell book 1984. 2084 is the new 1984.
When it comes down to the color palette, I gained much inspiration from Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street series. I used red and green combinations and diagonal "slashes" to reference this idea. Also, the director of the original Nightmare On Elm Street, Wes Craven, picked a red and green sweater for Freddy because when those two colors are combined, it makes people feel very uneasy which is exactly what I wanted for the Winter2084 collection, uneasiness.

Who or what inspires you creatively and why?
I pull my inspiration sources from darker and more futuristic ideas. A majority of my inspiration for my designs/photoshoots come from horror & sci fi films like Suspiria, Nightmare on Elm Street, Forbidden Planet, etc. I also gain a lot of inspiration from the industrial landscapes of New Jersey, high tension towers,anything geometric, computer circuit boards, noise music, and all things New Wave 80s.

One person who has been my major inspiration in life is Bjork. My dream is to design the clothing for her album tours. I discovered her at a very early age, and since the swan dress she has been my biggest hero. She does her own thing and always pushes the limits and innovations of her art.

What are your plans for the future?
A lot.I want my fashion designs/ fashion photography to be featured in avant-garde publications like Oyster, Surface Magazine, W, etc. Even art galleries. I plan on having more and more fashion collections and create clothes you can't really put on a hanger. Basically, I should plan on being a starving artist.
I am also launching a small tee shirt line called "Polymorphs" this fall!!

What experience do you have that has gotten you where you are today?
To be honest, I don't quite know where I am today. I know this: I work a full time job that is clearly not my dream job just to fund my art. I know I have been written about and showed my collection a few times. Sometimes I think I was just at the right place at the right time and impressed the right person.
I write and photograph for a fashion column on www.newyorkcool.com, which enables me to go to New York Fashion week. Just going to shows, writing about them, photographing them, wearing my designs and plastering business cards everywhere has also helped. None of my fashion internships as a designer assistant or interning for a fashion agency has gotten me anywhere. What I learned from them is that the fashion industry really takes advantage of people, interns especially. Jumping into the fashion world head first with the help of nobody has been an educational journey like no other. Diving head first into a shark tank.

What's your Favorite city?
I don't get to travel much.
I am not not really into New York City even though it's a 25 minute train ride away. I do love Jersey City. I love the surroundings (highways and factories) the culture, the bars, and the people too.

Favorite Designer: Pierre Cardin (Space Age 60s!)
Favorite Artist: Donald Judd

Something about you most people don't know?
I can wiggle my ears.

What are your plans this summer?
To work work work so I can fund money for my next collection. I have also embodied myself completely in my collection inspiration. I also plan on getting a cute tan!
